Real Wedding: Gardens House and Sophie at The Prahran Arcade
As a wedding photographer in Melbourne, I've had the privilege of capturing love stories in some of the city's most breathtaking spaces. Recently, I had the honor of documenting Lauren and Louis' spectacular wedding day, which took me from the serene beauty of Gardens House in the Royal Botanical Gardens to the opulent grandeur of Sophia at Prahran Arcade. Today, I'm excited to share my insights about these two remarkable venues that created the perfect backdrop for their unforgettable celebration.
Lauren and Louis
Before I dive into the venues, let me tell you a bit about this extraordinary couple. Lauren and Louis' Melbourne wedding was the epitome of glamour and luxury, seamlessly blending timeless elegance with a modern edge. Their day began with a breathtaking ceremony at Gardens House, where lush greenery and natural light created an intimate yet sophisticated setting for their vows.
What made their celebration even more special was Louis' passion for cars, both modern and vintage, which added another layer of sophistication to the day and brought that gentlemanly element to his demeanor. As the sun set, the celebration moved to the iconic Sophia at the Arcade, where opulence met romance in a space adorned with grand chandeliers, rich textures, and an atmosphere of pure indulgence. Every detail, from Lauren's show-stopping gown to the candlelit reception, exuded refinement and style.
Gardens House
A Venue of Endless Photographic Possibilities
From my perspective behind the lens, Gardens House offers an embarrassment of riches when it comes to wedding photography locations. As a photographer, I'm always looking for those perfect backdrops that will make memories last a lifetime, and Gardens House delivers them in abundance.
Intimate Garden Alcoves
The garden alcoves at this venue are simply magical. Perfectly framed by meticulously maintained foliage, these little pockets of tranquility create the most romantic settings for couple portraits. The dappled light filtering through the leaves adds a dreamy quality to the images that simply can't be replicated elsewhere.
Sprawling Lawns
For those grand, sweeping shots that capture the entire wedding party, the sprawling lawns are absolutely perfect. During Lauren and Louis' wedding, we gathered their friends and family on these lush green spaces, creating compositions that balanced the intimacy of their relationships with the grandeur of their surroundings.
Heritage Façade
The stunning heritage façade of Gardens House speaks directly to Melbourne's rich architectural history. Dating back to 1854, this brilliant double-storey property creates a timeless backdrop that adds gravitas and elegance to any wedding album. I particularly love positioning couples on the narrow garden path leading up to the house, with that magnificent façade framing them perfectly.
Second-Story Balcony
One of my favorite spots at Gardens House is undoubtedly the second-story balcony that spans the width of the house. It provides elevated views of the breathtaking gardens below and offers a unique perspective for photographs that capture both the couple and the magnificent setting they've chosen for their special day.

Versatility for Every Wedding Style
What impresses me most about Gardens House is its incredible versatility. I've photographed intimate elopements and grand celebrations here, and the venue has perfectly complemented each one. Whether your vision is intimate and romantic or grand and elaborate, Gardens House has the perfect setting to bring it to life.
Venue Capabilities and Spaces
Gardens House isn't just beautiful; it's incredibly functional. The venue offers multiple spaces that can accommodate different wedding styles and guest sizes:
Palm Lounge
This intimate space accommodates up to 30 guests for cocktail-style events. For Lauren and Louis' wedding, this served as a beautiful retreat for the couple to share a quiet moment together before rejoining their celebration.
Garnet Room
Perfect for smaller gatherings of up to 8 guests for a seated experience, this room offers an exclusive, intimate setting for those special moments with your closest loved ones.
Garden View
This stunning space accommodates up to 80 guests for seated dining, making it perfect for medium-sized wedding receptions. The natural light here is a photographer's dream!
The Terrace
Seating 24 guests with a cocktail capacity for 30, the terrace offers a beautiful indoor-outdoor experience that's especially magical during Melbourne's warmer months.
Alfresco Entertaining
For those dreaming of an outdoor celebration, the alfresco space can host up to 300 guests for cocktail-style events. Lauren and Louis utilized this area for a champagne hour between their ceremony and reception, and the photos captured there are simply stunning.
Garden Marquee
Capable of hosting up to 300 guests for a truly spectacular celebration (200 seated or 300 cocktail), the garden marquee option allows for grand celebrations in this historical setting.
A Unique Urban Escape
Located in close proximity to Melbourne's CBD, Gardens House offers something truly unique – an escape from urban hustle without leaving the city. As you stroll up the narrow garden path, surrounded by precisely manicured plants, you'll feel transported to another world. This juxtaposition creates a wonderful narrative element in wedding photographs – the serenity of nature within the heart of our bustling city.
Wedding Day Logistics
For couples considering Gardens House, here are some practical insights I've gathered from my experience photographing numerous weddings at this venue:
Ceremony Options
Both indoor and outdoor ceremony spaces are available, giving you flexibility regardless of Melbourne's famously unpredictable weather. Lauren and Louis opted for an outdoor ceremony beneath the canopy of centuries-old trees, which created a cathedral-like atmosphere of natural beauty.
Photo Locations
Multiple scenic backdrops within the gardens mean we never have to leave the venue to capture a diverse range of stunning images. This maximizes your time celebrating with guests rather than traveling between locations.
Capacity
The flexible spaces can accommodate everything from intimate gatherings to large celebrations of up to 300 guests. This adaptability makes Gardens House suitable for almost any wedding vision.
Proximity to CBD
The convenient location near Melbourne's CBD makes it easily accessible for guests while still offering that secluded garden atmosphere that feels miles away from the city.
Working with the Venue
As someone who has photographed numerous weddings here, I recommend:
Book Early
Gardens House is an extremely popular venue, and dates fill quickly, especially during peak wedding season. I've seen couples secure their date up to 18 months in advance.
Consider the Season
Each season offers unique photographic opportunities at Gardens House. Spring brings magnificent blooms, summer offers extended golden hour lighting, autumn delivers rich colors, and winter provides soft, diffused light that's incredible for portraits.
Consult with the Venue Team
The staff at Gardens House are incredibly helpful in planning your day. Their experience and insights can be invaluable in creating a timeline that maximizes both your experience and the photographic potential of the space.
Plan Your Timeline
The changing light throughout the day can create magical photographic moments. I always work closely with my couples to plan their schedule around the best lighting conditions, especially for key moments like the ceremony and couple portraits.

Sophia at the Prahran Arcade
After capturing the heartfelt ceremony at Gardens House, Lauren and Louis' celebration moved to one of Melbourne's most spectacular historical venues: Sophia at the Prahran Arcade on Chapel Street.
A Venue Steeped in History and Grandeur
One of Melbourne's most iconic buildings, Sophia is housed within the historic Prahran Arcade, which famously was home to David Bromley's studio and residence for 13 years. Today, this Chapel Street icon has been lovingly restored to its former glory to become a multi-faceted events space that can host every style of occasion.
The moment I walked into Sophia with my camera, I was struck by the sheer grandeur of the space. This venue epitomizes the excesses of late 19th century Victorian architecture. To put it simply... it's an absolute showstopper!
Spectacular Spaces for Unforgettable Celebrations
Inside Sophia resides two distinct spaces that may be used independently or together:
The Ballroom
This elegant room, which seats 100 guests or accommodates 180 for cocktail-style events, features ornate chandeliers and a breathtaking balcony overlooking Chapel Street. For Lauren and Louis' reception, this space was transformed into an opulent dining area where guests enjoyed an exquisite meal under the warm glow of crystal chandeliers.
The Gallery
Perhaps the most remarkable feature of Sophia is The Gallery – an impressive 60-meter space punctuated by 26 arched windows which reveal the elaborate architectural works suspended high above the arcade. With capacity for 208 seated guests or 350 for cocktail events, this space provided the perfect setting for Lauren and Louis' evening of dancing and celebration.
Capturing the Magic
As a photographer, Sophia presents both thrilling opportunities and unique challenges. The dramatic lighting, architectural details, and rich textures create photographs with incredible depth and atmosphere. The venue's grand scale requires careful composition to capture both the intimate moments between the couple and their guests, as well as the magnificent setting they've chosen.
Some of my favorite shots from Lauren and Louis' reception include:
Intimate moments on the balcony overlooking the bustling Chapel Street below
The couple's first dance beneath the spectacular chandeliers
Detail shots of the meticulously restored architectural elements
The warm, ambient lighting creating a cocoon of celebration as the night progressed
A Perfect Complement to Gardens House
What made Lauren and Louis' wedding so photographically spectacular was the contrast between their two chosen venues. Beginning in the natural beauty and daylight of Gardens House before transitioning to the opulent, dramatic atmosphere of Sophia created a wedding album that tells a complete story – from romantic garden ceremony to glamorous urban celebration.

Planning Your Own Two-Venue Wedding Day
If you're inspired by Lauren and Louis' approach of combining two distinctive venues, here are some insights from my experience that might help your planning:
Consider Logistics
Ensure there's enough time for guests to travel between venues, accounting for Melbourne traffic. For photography purposes, I recommend allowing at least 30 minutes at the first venue after guests depart to capture the couple alone in that space.
Create Continuity
While choosing contrasting venues adds visual interest, consider maintaining some elements of continuity through consistent styling, floral themes, or color palettes.
Transportation
For Lauren and Louis' wedding, Louis' passion for cars came into play beautifully, with vintage and modern luxury vehicles transporting the wedding party between venues – creating another opportunity for stunning photographs.
Timeline Planning
When working across two venues, a carefully planned timeline becomes even more essential. I always work closely with my couples to ensure we're maximizing photographic opportunities while maintaining the flow of their celebration.
Final Thoughts
Melbourne brides and grooms are truly spoiled for choice when it comes to wedding venues, but the combination of Gardens House and Sophia at Prahran Arcade stands out as particularly special. Together, these venues tell a story of Melbourne itself – our deep appreciation for natural beauty alongside our rich architectural heritage and urban sophistication.
Lauren and Louis' wedding day was a perfect reflection of these two extraordinary people – elegant, refined, and full of meaningful moments. It was my absolute privilege to document their celebration across these two stunning Melbourne venues.
