Luxury Venue Spotlight: Petra Paros - Greece
Hi, I'm Andy, owner and photographer at Ten Acres Agency here in Melbourne. Over the years I've photographed weddings on beaches, in vineyards, in old churches and in backyards, but every so often a venue comes along that genuinely stops me in my tracks. Petra Estate, on the Greek island of Paros, is one of those places. I wanted to write about it properly, not just as a photographer chasing good light (although there is plenty of that), but as someone who thinks it deserves a proper introduction for any couple dreaming of a destination wedding.
So grab a coffee, and let me tell you why Petra has quietly become one of my favourite venues to talk about.
A Farmhouse With a View Worth the Flight
Petra Estate was built in the 1980s and sits high above the iconic bay of Kolymbithres, looking straight across at the whitewashed village of Naousa. If you've never been to Paros, picture this: soft evening light bouncing off whitewashed houses on the far side of the water, fuchsia bougainvillea spilling over Parian marble, and stone staircases worn smooth by generations of footsteps. It's the kind of view that makes you stop talking mid-sentence.
What I love most about Petra is that it isn't a manicured resort pretending to be something it's not. It's set among genuine olive groves and a working vineyard, which means the estate has a rhythm and a texture to it that you simply can't manufacture. There are ancient olive trees that look like they could tell stories, baby chicks following their mother around the grounds, and large ceramic amphorae once used for storing olive oil sitting alongside wine barrels stained deep red from years of use. It blends the polish of a destination wedding with something much rarer: real Greek hospitality and a working farm you can actually feel.
Getting Ready in the Bridal Suite
For couples who want to make the most of their day from the very first moment, Petra's rustic farmhouse includes a bridal suite that can be rented for the morning. It's a lovely, relaxed space for you and your closest bridesmaids or family to get ready together, with refreshments on hand and panoramic views behind you for photos before a single guest has even arrived. As a photographer, this is honestly one of my favourite parts of any wedding day, the quiet, unpolished moments before the ceremony, and Petra gives you a genuinely beautiful backdrop to start the story.
Saying "I Do" in the Chapel Courtyard
The ceremony itself takes place in the chapel's courtyard, tucked among olive trees, wild oregano, and pomegranate trees heavy with fruit. There's something about walking down the aisle with the scent of oregano in the air and a breeze coming off the bay that feels completely different to a traditional indoor ceremony back home.
The chapel interior has been painted by two of Greece's most respected iconographers, which adds a real sense of history and craftsmanship to the setting, and it comfortably seats up to 120 guests. Whether your ceremony is intimate or on the larger side, there's room to do it properly.
Celebrating Poolside, and Beyond
Once the vows are done, the celebration moves to the pool area. Petra's classically shaped swimming pool becomes the natural gathering point for guests, with dinner seating for up to 80 people and a raised area to one side perfect for a smaller dance floor or a more intimate corner of the party.
If you're planning something bigger, Petra's dedicated event space is only a short walk from the pool and comfortably fits 150 guests plus a full dance floor. It's set in the heart of the farm with those same spectacular views, and honestly, it's the kind of blank canvas that a good event planner can really run with.
Where Everyone Stays
One of the things I always tell couples considering a destination wedding is that the accommodation matters just as much as the ceremony space, because it shapes the whole weekend, not just the day itself.
The Cycladic Villa
The villa's upper floor holds a state-of-the-art kitchen, dining room, and living areas split by a double-facing fireplace, opening onto a wide veranda with three separate seating zones overlooking Naousa Bay. Downstairs, both bedrooms have their own en-suite and walk-in closet. Then there's the infinity pool, perched above an olive grove with its own shallow jacuzzi, which is about as far from a crowded beach as you can get.
The ฯฮตtra Guesthouse
Just above the villa sits the ฯฮตtra guesthouse, wrapped in Mediterranean gardens and topped with a herb-filled green roof. There's a hammock strung under an old olive tree for lazy afternoons, a private jacuzzi for hot days, and outdoor seating that's perfect for morning coffee or a sunset drink.
A Day on the Water
For a proper day off before or after the wedding, Petra can arrange a traditional wooden caique, a 15-metre boat with a captain who'll take you to hidden beaches and coves around Paros and the neighbouring islands, stopping at local tavernas along the way. It fits up to 14 guests, with fruit and drinks provided, and it's a genuinely magical way to spend a day with your closest people.
A Real, Working Farm
What sets Petra apart for me is that it's a genuinely sustainable, family-run farm. They grow olives, capers, oregano, lavender, figs, grapes and other herbs on-site, and everything, from cultivation through to harvest, processing and packaging, happens right there on the property. No chemical fertilisers are used; instead the farm relies on homemade compost, local animal manure, and a rotational grazing system for their chickens, who help manage weeds naturally as they roam. It's a level of care that shows in every corner of the estate.
Why It Matters to Me as a Photographer
Petra only hosts 10 weddings a year, deliberately. That's not a marketing line, it's a genuine choice to protect the land and give every couple proper time and attention. From what I understand, communication runs through one point of contact throughout planning, and their team stays on-site during the entire event to oversee vendors and work alongside your wedding planner.
As a photographer, that kind of care matters. It means the light, the setting, and the atmosphere haven't been rushed or overbooked, they've been protected. And that's exactly the kind of place I want to be pointing my camera on someone's wedding day.
If you're a Melbourne couple weighing up a destination wedding and Greece is even a whisper on your list, Petra Estate deserves a proper look. I'd love to talk you through what a day there could look like.
