Luxury Venue Spotlight: Barunah Plains
I've photographed weddings across Victoria β from rooftop ceremonies in the CBD to intimate vineyard gatherings in the Yarra Valley β but every now and then, a venue stops me in my tracks. Barunah Plains is one of those places. The moment I first turned off the highway and drove through the property gates, I knew this was somewhere special. Something about the rolling golden paddocks, the ancient bluestone buildings, and the sheer scale of the landscape made me reach for my camera before I'd even stepped out of the car.
If you're in the early stages of planning your wedding and you're dreaming of something that feels real, rooted, and utterly unforgettable, I want to tell you everything I know about Barunah Plains. As a Melbourne-based wedding photographer who has had the privilege of working at this venue, I can tell you that the images almost make themselves here β and that, trust me, is a rare thing.
What Is Barunah Plains?
Let me set the scene. Barunah Plains is a true, working Merino sheep station. We're talking 640 acres of picturesque Victorian farmland, located just 30 minutes from Geelong β close enough to the city to be convenient, far enough away to feel like you've truly escaped. The property has been part of Victoria's agricultural story for over 150 years, and at its heart stands a magnificent homestead dating back to 1866.
This is not a purpose-built wedding factory. It's not a blank warehouse dressed up with fairy lights. Barunah Plains is a living, breathing piece of Australian pastoral history β and that authenticity shows in every photograph I've taken here.
The property sits in Victoria's Western District, and if you've ever driven through that part of the state, you'll know the landscape: vast open skies, the kind of afternoon light that photographers dream about, and a sense of timelessness that you simply can't manufacture. Combine that with heritage-listed buildings, manicured gardens, a creek, a rock wall, and views that stretch to the horizon, and you start to understand why couples keep choosing this place.
The Ceremony Settings
One of the first things I always tell couples considering Barunah Plains is that you're not choosing just one backdrop β you're choosing an entire landscape.
The Homestead Gardens
The meticulously maintained gardens surrounding the 1866 homestead are, in a word, stunning. They offer a variety of distinct spaces for your ceremony, your drinks hour, and your canapΓ©s. As a photographer, I love working in gardens because the layers of texture β clipped hedges, flowering borders, gravel paths, mature trees β give depth to every frame.
But what makes the Barunah Plains gardens feel different from so many other heritage garden venues is the sense of scale. You're not cramped into a small courtyard. The property stretches out around you, and you're constantly aware of the broader landscape β the paddocks, the creek, the wide open sky. It creates a kind of breathing room in your photos that I find incredibly special.
The Bridge, the Creek, and the Rock Wall
If I had to pick three specific features of Barunah Plains that I photograph again and again, it would be the quaint bridge spanning Warrimbeine Creek, the striking historic rock wall, and the distant sunset views over the homestead. These three elements alone could fill a wedding album. The bridge is particularly magical for couple portraits β there's something about water and stone that creates an almost cinematic quality in photographs. I've taken some of my favourite images of my career on and around that bridge.
And the sunsets. Honestly, the sunsets at Barunah Plains need to be seen to be believed. The flat open farmland means the horizon is enormous, and when the light turns that deep amber and rose gold in the late afternoon, the homestead seems to glow. If you're planning a summer wedding, plan your ceremony timing around that golden hour. You won't regret it.

The Reception Spaces
Here's something I've learned after years of photographing weddings: venue flexibility matters enormously β not just for your planning, but for the quality of your day. Rigid curfews, strict noise restrictions, and limited setup windows can quietly drain the joy from an event. Barunah Plains takes a completely different approach.
The Iconic Bluestone Woolshed
The woolshed is the star of the show for receptions, and it photographs magnificently. This is a real, working shearing shed with thick bluestone walls, soaring ceilings, and the kind of raw, honest character that no amount of interior design can replicate. It seats up to 200 guests for a sit-down dinner or accommodates 300+ in a cocktail format, so it works beautifully for both intimate gatherings and larger celebrations.
At night, with the right lighting β and I always encourage couples to invest in good event lighting in a space like this β the woolshed becomes something genuinely magical. The rough-hewn walls catch the warm glow beautifully, and the scale of the space gives wedding photographs a dramatic depth that I love.
Marquee and Open-Air Options
For couples who want to go truly grand in scale, or who simply love the idea of dancing under the stars, Barunah Plains also offers marquee receptions and open-air events. One of the genuine advantages of a private property like this is that the capacity is effectively unlimited in a marquee format. Your guest list doesn't dictate your venue β your vision does.
No Curfews. No Compromise.
I want to emphasise something, because it matters: as a private property, Barunah Plains can offer a level of flexibility that public and commercial venues simply cannot. Early curfews and strict noise restrictions can feel like a wet blanket thrown over an evening that's just hitting its stride. At Barunah Plains, you have the freedom to celebrate your day the way you've imagined it.
Accommodations For a Weekend Wedding
One of the things that elevates Barunah Plains from a wedding venue to a genuine wedding experience is the on-site accommodation. Rather than saying goodbye to your nearest and dearest at the end of the night, you can wake up together the next morning over coffee in the homestead kitchen. For a wedding photographer, this also means I can sometimes capture those beautiful, relaxed morning-after moments β the candid laughter, the recap of the night before, the quiet joy of a newlywed couple on the verandah.
The Homestead
Listed by both the National Trust and Heritage Victoria, the Barunah Plains Homestead is a world unto itself. With 10 bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, and the capacity to sleep 22 people, it's the perfect base for the wedding party and close family. The house is a genuinely inspired blend of heritage and modern comfort: you'll find a large AGA kitchen, a billiards room, a ballroom converted into a sitting and dining space, a formal library, multiple living rooms, and a large pool with an outdoor kitchen and poolhouse. There's also a tennis court, indoor fireplaces, an outdoor firepit, and even a built-in trampoline.
I've photographed couples having breakfast on the homestead verandah with views out across the creek and paddocks, and I can tell you β those images are some of the most beautifully relaxed and authentic moments I've captured.
The Shearers Quarters
For the wider guest group, the Shearers Quarters offer rustic, communal charm that suits the spirit of the property perfectly. Sleeping up to 42 guests across 16 rooms, with a commercial kitchen, large dining room, shared bathrooms, fireplaces, and outdoor fire pits β this is a space designed for connection. There's something wonderful about a wedding weekend where guests don't disappear to separate hotels across town, but instead gather around a fire pit together, toasting marshmallows and reliving the highlights of your day.
The Jackaroos Quarters
For guests who want a little more privacy and polish, the Jackaroos Quarters offer six luxurious queen-size hotel rooms, each with a private ensuite, air conditioning, Nespresso machine, WiFi, and contemporary dΓ©cor. These 25sqm pods are thoughtfully designed β the kind of accommodation that punches well above its weight.
Glamping
And for those who want something truly unique β the glamping options at Barunah Plains are genuinely spectacular. Bell tents set in a private space on the property, styled for comfort, and perfectly suited to wedding guests who want an experience rather than just a bed. For the right couple and the right crowd, this option is unforgettable.
Planning Your Wedding at Barunah Plains
If the thought of planning a wedding at a property of this scale feels daunting, I want to reassure you. Barunah Plains has an established network of trusted suppliers β caterers, florists, stylists, and more β that the venue actively recommends. This is such a valuable resource for couples who don't know where to start. You're not navigating a blank canvas without a map; you're getting the benefit of a venue that has done this many times and knows exactly who to call.
As your photographer, I'm also always happy to walk through a venue like Barunah Plains with you before your wedding day to plan your shot list, identify the best light at different times of day, and map out the moments we want to capture. A venue this rich in detail rewards preparation.
Why I Love Photographing Weddings at Barunah Plains
Every photographer has venues they love to work in, and Barunah Plains is firmly on my list. The light here is extraordinary β that wide open Western District sky means golden hour lasts longer, and the variety of textures and settings means I'm never short of a compelling frame. The bluestone, the timber, the gardens, the creek, the paddocks β every surface and setting has its own character.
But beyond the aesthetics, what I love most about Barunah Plains is the feeling of the place. It feels genuine. It feels like Victoria. It feels like history that's still alive and being written. When I look back at weddings I've photographed here, the images feel timeless in a way that I think speaks to that authenticity.
